Description
Scanned slides documenting "Scotch and Cigars: The Jeff Viner Retrospective Exhibition." The exhibition, curated by Mark Dicey and organized by the arts collective Art Catalyst, was displayed in the New Gallery's location at 516d 9th Avenue S.W., Calgary. It ran from January 7-29, 2000.

Jeff Viner (1955-1998) was a valued and active member of Calgary's arts community. A long-time supporter of The New Gallery, and the president of its board for the two years prior to his death, Viner passed away prematurely in 1998 from complications related to polymyositis. "Scotch and Cigars" was an exhibition celebrating his work, and was accompanied by a catalogue of the same name.

Viner's practice was diverse, ranging from experimental -- including found object collages, assemblages and performance art -- to more traditional work, such as naturalistic painting. He was known for creating art using whatever materials were available, including prescription pill bottles left from the treatment of his disease.

For this exhibition, the members of Art Catalyst consisted of Mark Dicey, Melody Jacobson, Don Mabie, Grant Poier, Debra Rushfeldt, Cori Stent and Luke Viner.
